Papua New Guinea lies just south of the equator, 160 kilometres north of Australia.
The Hiri, or trade voyage, from the Central Province of Papua New Guinea began in the 18th century. A unique boat - the Lakatoi - was designed to take local specialities to trade in other provinces. Its successful, historic journey is still commemorated as part of Papua New Guinea's Independence Day celebrations. The Liquid Niugini Gas logo was inspired by the Lakatoi.
